Does a Local Business Still Need a Website in 2026?

October 2026  ·  8 min read  ·  By Rahul N

Plenty of busy, well-loved local businesses have no website. The café down the road has 900 Google reviews and a queue on Sundays. The barber is booked out a week ahead through Instagram. So it's a fair question: if customers already find you on Google Maps and social media, why bother with a website?

The short answer: your Google listing gets you found; your website gets you chosen. They do different jobs, and the businesses that win locally usually have both.

In one line: keep your Google Business Profile up to date, and link it to a fast, phone-friendly website that shows what the listing can't: your full menu or services, your story, your best reviews, and an easy way to get in touch.

What a Google listing does well

Your Google Business Profile (the listing on Google Maps and in search) is the most important free tool a local business has. It puts you on the map, literally, with your hours, phone number, photos, directions and reviews. If you do nothing else, keep it complete and current.

But a listing is a form with fixed boxes. Every business in your category fills in the same boxes, and they all look roughly the same in the results. That's where a website comes in.

Seven things a website does that a listing can't

1. It shows the whole menu, price list or service range

Customers want to know what you offer and roughly what it costs before they visit or call. Menus on Maps are often missing, out of date or a blurry photo. On your own site, it's clear, current and readable on a phone.

2. It tells people why you, not the place next door

Your listing says "café, 4.5 stars". Your website can say you're the rooftop with private glass domes for proposals, or the garden café with plants you can take home after lunch. That one idea is what makes someone choose you, and a listing has no space for it.

3. It's the one online space you own

Social platforms change their rules, their algorithms and their layouts, and accounts get restricted by mistake. Some visitors can't see everything without logging in. A website is yours: same address, same content, open to everyone.

4. It makes the business look established

Fairly or not, many people see a business with no website as smaller or less reliable, especially for bigger decisions: a clinic, a wedding caterer, a contractor, a venue for a celebration. A good site removes that doubt before they call.

5. It turns visitors into enquiries and bookings

A website can put WhatsApp, call and directions buttons right where someone is reading, and take party bookings, bulk orders or appointment requests. A listing only offers a call button and a link.

6. It gives you one link to share everywhere

Instagram bio, WhatsApp Business profile, printed menus, flyers, delivery-app profiles, email signatures: they all need one link that shows the full picture. Your website is that link.

7. It helps you show up for more searches

Search engines read websites to understand what you offer. A site that clearly describes your dishes, services and neighbourhood gives you more chances to appear when someone searches for something specific, like "vegan brunch near me" or "kids' dance classes in Leeds", not just your business name.

ℹ️ Google used to offer simple free websites through Business Profiles, but retired them in 2024. If you relied on one, your listing now needs a link to a website of your own.

"But websites are expensive and a lot of work"

That's the real reason most owners don't have one, and it used to be true. You either paid an agency, or spent evenings fighting a website builder and ended up with a template that looks like everyone else's.

There's now a third option. GrabNear builds free websites for local businesses: a one-off design around your business, made for phones, with your reviews, menu or services, and one-tap WhatsApp, call and directions. You send us your Google Maps link; we send you a preview. Here's how it works, and you can see live examples on the showcase.

When you might not need a website (yet)

To be fair, a website isn't urgent for every business. If you're fully booked through referrals, have no plans to grow, or are trying out an idea for a few weeks, a well-kept Google listing and a social page may be enough for now. Once you want more customers, or customers who spend more, a website pays for the little effort it takes.

A quick checklist for your online presence

  1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile: category, hours, photos and phone number.
  2. Reply to reviews, both good and bad. Future customers read the replies.
  3. Get a fast, phone-friendly website with your menu or services and clear contact buttons.
  4. Add the website link to your Google listing, Instagram bio and WhatsApp Business profile.
  5. Keep prices, hours and holiday closures up to date in all three places.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Google Business Profile enough for a small business?
It's essential, but it isn't enough on its own. A Google listing shows your basics, while a website lets you show your full menu or services, explain what makes you different, take enquiries, and give customers one link to share. The two work best together: add your website to your Business Profile.
Can I use Instagram or Facebook instead of a website?
Social pages are great for reaching people, but you don't control them: reach depends on the algorithm, some visitors need an account to see everything, and the page can disappear if an account is restricted. A website is the one place online that you own.
Does Google still offer free websites for businesses?
No. Google retired the simple websites it used to offer through Business Profiles in 2024. You can still link your own website to your Business Profile.
How much does a website for a local business cost?
It ranges from free (DIY builders with ads, or done-for-you offers like GrabNear's free websites) to a few hundred or several thousand in your local currency for a custom agency build, plus hosting and domain costs.
